Quad Brakelights on 1966 Corvette

Early C2 Corvettes have 4 rear brakelights. The 1967 has 4 also. The 1966 seems to be short changed with only 2 rear Brake Lights. I feel that 4 is safer for people to see when you are braking. However, I did not want to look unoriginal and did not want to give up reverse lights. With the advent of LED lights, there are now dual lights that are white/red and white/amber. I have documented below how I managed to make this happen so I now have the best of both worlds plus it is kind of neat.

Here are the lights found on EBAY for $20/pair.

To save modifying the reverse light housing, I soldered new wires on the back of the bulb. As it is not a vacuum style bulb, this is not a problem. I used red and white wires to help once installed to get the right color. Also, as this is a 1157 bulb with staggered mounting tips, one of the tips will need to be ground off so it will insert and turn in the housing. I ground off the one furthest away from the base so the bulb will not be in a hole.

Here is how it looks with the wires coming out the back. I drilled an extra hole in the rubber grommet for the extra wire and poked the wires through.

Here is the wiring overview. I used a 5 pole relay to isolate the brake light power to the center lights when the reverse power is engerized. I also got some plugs so if the lights have to be removed, they can be unplugged very simply.

Here are the reverse lights alone

This is Brake lights alone. The outside lights are the LED Array that comes with built in lens for the C2 Corvettes. Slightly different color and brightness but still looks red. Would probably look deeper if going through a red lens.

This is with reverse lights and brake lights both on.
